MILANI GALLERY in collaboration with Singapore Gallery as Chan + Hori Contemporary presents ‘The Glass Eye Opens’ – a synergy of complimentary works by Luke Roberts and Ruben Pang.
The exhibition will present recent work by the aforementioned duo, including Pang’s portrait of her divine eminence Pope Alice (aka Luke Roberts’ alter-ego), and Roberts’ major new installation ‘Hidden Histories 2017’.
About the artists –
Ruban Pang
A Singapore based artist. He graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2010 and held his first solo show at Chan Hampe Galleries in 2011. He is renowned for his ethereal paintings on aluminium. Pang has received the Winston Oh Travelogue Award, the Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship, and was shortlisted for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize. In 2015 Pang was selected as the inaugural artist-in-residence launched by the Tiroche DeLeon Collection in Jaffa, Israel.
Luke Roberts
Painter, photographer and performance artist, Luke Roberts was born in Alpha, Queensland and lives and works in Brisbane. He is the creator of the Mu Museum and has been working with the concept of the Wunderkammer for many decades. His Wunderkammern have featured in Australian Perspectas 1991 & 1995 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the MoMA PS1, Clocktower, New York. His Mu Embassy was part of the 2nd Asia-Pacific Triennial at the Queensland Art Gallery. The 2002 Biennale of Sydney showcased his work and recently he participated in Do Disturb at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Major solo exhibitions include AlphaStation / Alphaville at the IMA, Brisbane and ACP, Sydney. Luke was the Australian Fellow at MoMA PS1, New York and an artist scholar at the British School at Rome.
Luke Roberts’ alter ego, Pope Alice, is an extraterrestrial ambassador and spiritual leader with an out-of-this-world view, who speaks of ancient advanced civilisations that once existed on Earth. She maintains that Planet Earth is an outpost regularly visited by beings from other worlds. Her mission to this planet is to raise human consciousness and awaken humanity to the wonders of creation. Pope Alice questions accepted wisdom and presents alternative explanations of our history and origins.
A visit by Her Divine Holiness Pope Alice will take place right here on James St on Saturday 28 October at 4pm.
