Little Chefs, Big Icons
Nostalgia is having a moment, and the James St Kids Cake Haus is serving it up with icing and all.
Bringing The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book to life for James St Food + Wine Trail (JSFWT), this hands-on ticketed workshop invites mini makers and bakers to recreate cupcake-sized versions of three beloved designs.
Presented in partnership with The Australian Women’s Weekly and Jocelyn’s Provisions, each guided decorating session will focus on one cake icon at a time and will supply participants with all components required to make their cupcake creations a reality.
Meet the cake icons making their cupcake comeback, along with their session times, below.
The Rubber Ducky | 10AM, 11:30AM, 1PM, 2:30PM
With its potato-chip beak and popcorn feathers, the rubber ducky is one of the book’s most recognisable characters. Inspired by a grandchild’s real-life bath toy, its original standing sponge-cake structure was famously tricky to pull off. At Kids Cake Haus, the duck returns in a more manageable cupcake form, ready for a new generation of decorators.
The Swimming Pool | 10:30AM, 12PM, 1:30PM, 3PM
A backyard dream in jelly form, the swimming pool cake captures a very specific kind of Australian childhood magic. The original design used green jelly water, biscuit fencing and tiny swimming figures to transform a humble cake into a suburban summer scene. For JSFWT, mini makers will create their own sweet nod to the pool party classic.
Dolly Varden | 11AM, 12:30PM, 2PM, 3:30PM
Before Barbie cakes ruled birthday tables, there was Dolly Varden. Named for a brightly dressed character from Charles Dickens’ Barnaby Rudge, the design became known for its billowing skirt shape and marshmallow polka dot. This cupcake version keeps the sense of dress-up drama, complete with a candy-coloured marshmallow finish.
Tickets are $20pp + booking fees and include a copy of The Australian Women's Weekly Birthday Cake Book.
