Eat Your Way Around James St Food + Wine Trail
Sunday 26 July is serving James St by the street, lane and laneway, with each pocket of the precinct bringing its own flavour to the table.
From freshly shucked oysters in Fortitude Lane to pizza al taglio in Little James, we’ve mapped one dish to seek out at every food stall. Arrive hungry, choose your route but make sure leave room for the next stop.
Fortitude Lane
Start by the sea with freshly shucked oysters from FreshFishCo, followed by a mixed sashimi plate from FreshSushiCo. For something fresh from the grill, ēmmē is serving a charcoal doner kebab with pickles and labneh, while James St Bakery has the sweet finish covered with its Bee Sting cake.
Ada Lane
A short turn into Ada Lane brings plenty to work through. It’s the return of the classic crowd pleaser that is the soft-shell crab bao at sAme sAme, while LOS is frying churros with Thai tea dulce de leche. At Biànca, look for the mortadella focaccia with ricotta, then follow it with Lobby Bar Food’s ‘SeaFeed’ beef brisket slider with Davidson plum chilli glaze and slaw. Jocelyn’s Provisions rounds out the lane on a sweet note with 100s + 1000s lamingtons.
Doggett Street
Doggett Street keeps things sharp and savoury. Sushi Room is serving spicy tuna crispy rice, SK Steak & Oyster has steak tartare with crackers, and Hellenika is firing up chargrilled lamb on the spit with tzatziki and pita bread.
Arthur Street
On Arthur Street, Mosconi returns with its much-loved porchetta roll, while Gelato Messina takes dessert into campfire territory with S’more Please, featuring milk chocolate gelato, brownie cheesecake swirl, graham cracker crumb and toasted vanilla marshmallow.
James and Robertson Streets
At the centre of the action, James & Antler is pressing their beloved birria croque monsieur, and Sixes and Sevens is serving crispy fried pork dumplings with sweet hot sauce. The Green is loading up its signature Green Snack Pack with chicken or lamb, za’atar fries, pickled chillies and garlic toum, while ESSA brings the heat with a wagyu skewer and spicy green sauce. Nearby, NIIWA is dishing up chicken karaage with spicy yuzu mayo.
Little James
Finish the circuit in Little James, where Gemelli is slicing margherita pizza al taglio, Penelope is dressing oysters with champagne and strawberry mignonette, and Laneway Bagels is stacking mini bagel sets three different ways.
That is one dish from every stall, but only the beginning of what is on offer. Muse over all that’s on the menu and forge a foodie Trail of your own here.
